PHIXER for Ambisonics: stereo fold-down phase and mono compatibility
An Ambisonic bed (first-order or higher, FuMa or AmbiX) can feel tall and wrap-around in a decoder or VR headset. After stereo fold-down for phones, Bluetooth, livestreams, club PA, or a headset fallback that sums L+R, the middle thins and low-mid body dips while edges stay. Ambisonic-to-stereo decode is not Mid/Side encoding, not a binaural dummy-head print, and not a widener. Polarity and a few samples of timing come first on the stereo result. Free phase-repair helps after residual L/R fights remain on a stereo fold you must keep stereo. It is not an Ambisonic decoder, not a rotation tool, and it does not replace a true mono listen after the fold.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not an Ambisonic decoder, not a FuMa/AmbiX converter, not a polarity button, not a delay matcher, and not a substitute for mono audition after stereo fold-down. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on a stereo fold you must keep stereo.
Three Ambisonic fold-down failure modes this page covers
- Ambisonic-to-stereo decode with a flipped or swapped component. W vs X/Y, FuMa vs AmbiX mixup, or a reversed stereo pair out of the decoder can hollow the center in fold while the decoded stereo still sounds immersive in headphones.
- Decoded Ambisonic stereo into Mid/Side or width tools. Encoding or widening a fold-down can scoop Mid body on phone and club fold. Cousin: PHIXER for Mid-Side.
- Ambisonic fold next to binaural, Decca Tree, or spot stereo. Stacking immersive decode with dummy-head beds or main arrays piles more cancellation under fold. Cousins: Binaural and Decca Tree.
Fast Ambisonic stereo-fold mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Decode to stereo first (your renderer, DAW plugin, or headset fallback). Then sum L+R with a monitor controller or utility. Do not mute one decoded side to "hear the problem."
- A/B stereo vs mono across a sustained soft source and a transient. Note what disappears: center body, attack, wrap-around tone, or image that was actually cancellation.
- Confirm the decoder output is not polarity-flipped by accident (W/X/Y wiring, FuMa vs AmbiX, left/right swap). Flip Ø on one stereo side if body returns immediately. Then nudge a few samples of L vs R attack timing before chasing plugins.
- Confirm on a phone speaker, then again after bus EQ / compressor / reverb send. Re-check after Mid/Side, width, binaural, or Decca Tree beds join the bus.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. True mono listen on the stereo fold
Hard L+R sum with both ears open. Habit: mono check workflow.
2. Decoder / format hygiene before plugins
If mono scoops only when FuMa and AmbiX are mixed, or when W/X/Y labels drift, fix the decode first. Format mistakes are not free stereo.
3. Polarity before more processing
Flip Ø on one decoded side while mono. Keep the flip that returns body. Guide: polarity vs phase.
4. Attack timing before spectral tools
Nudge a few samples or ms so transient peaks agree across L and R of the fold. Often enough on phones, streams, and VR headset fallback even on beds that should already be time-aligned in the sphere.
5. Skip when intentional thin mono is the point
Some Side-heavy immersive folds are meant to stay edge-only in mono. Honesty list: When not to use PHIXER.
6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a stereo Ambisonic fold must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
Ambisonic fold-down setups and common mono failures
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| First-order Ambisonic to stereo (FuMa) | Center body dips; wrap-around stays | Mono listen; check W/X/Y labels and Ø |
| AmbiX SN3D decode to stereo | Same scoop if channel order is wrong | Confirm AmbiX vs FuMa; polarity |
| Higher-order Ambisonics (HOA) fold | More components, more chance of a flipped pair | Decode hygiene; then stereo mono check |
| Ambisonic fold into M/S or widener | Mid scoops harder in fold | Mid-side use-case |
| Ambisonic + binaural / dummy-head | Pair middle hollows on phone | Binaural cousin |
| Ambisonic + Decca Tree / spots | Main-array center cancels under fold | Decca Tree cousin |
| VR headset stereo fallback | Immersive in cans, thin on phone / stream | Mono check the fallback pair |
| Master-bus width after Ambisonic fold | Streaming / phone fold thins | Mono check master; less width |
Binaural, Decca Tree, and Mid-side cousins (short version)
- Binaural / dummy-head beds share fold surprises with Ambisonic stereo decode when one ear or Side is wrong. Full write-up: PHIXER for Binaural.
- Decca Tree / orchestral main arrays share center cancel on phone and hall fold. Full write-up: PHIXER for Decca Tree.
- Ambisonic folds often meet Mid/Side matrices in immersive, VR, and ensemble capture. Full write-up: PHIXER for Mid-Side.
- Polarity and attack timing still come first on every cousin. Spectral tools after residual L/R fights only.
When not to reach for PHIXER
- FuMa / AmbiX or W/X/Y labels are simply wrong (fix the decode first).
- Wrong polarity on one decoded channel (flip Ø first).
- Obvious attack misalignment on the stereo fold (nudge first).
- You only need a mono-safe center print, not a stereo Ambisonic fold.
- Intentional Side-heavy texture that is meant to stay thin in mono.
- Honesty list: When not to use PHIXER.
